Grieving is a difficult process for adults, let alone for children.

David’s Story is a straightforward read that can be completed in one sitting. The book centres around a character by the name of David who experiences the tragic loss of his mother.

In his story, we are offered a glimpse into his emotional state of grief and confusion at her passing. He later discovers that instead of running away, there is a healthier way to cope with difficult feelings, which is to grieve together with remaining loved ones in his life.

Against the backdrop of a dark season, David’s Story brings forth light and hope, and explores the ideas of loss, grief, and family, in a language that is easily accessible for young readers,

Nestled within the 32-pages were brief mentions of terms like “therapist” and “family services centre”, which is a great way of introducing the idea of community help and professional support, such as counselling, to children who have trouble coping with overwhelming emotions in the face of loss, tragedy and hardship.

The 32-page book is peppered with colourful and meaningful illustrations, some of which lend clues to the author’s personal journey with tragedy, which was the inspiration behind this beautiful story of new hope and love.
